Workflow Engines & Python at March 2022 IndyPy

On what was also International Women’s Day, the March 2022 edition of IndyPy — Indiana’s largest Python meetup founded in 2007 by Six Feet Up CTO and Amazon Web Services (AWS) Community Hero, Calvin Hendryx-Parker — featured Workflow Engines & Python. In his presentation, Sanjay Siddhanti, Director of Engineering at AKASA, discusses how Python allows AKASA software to save money for clients.

According to Sanjay’s presentation, 66.5% of personal bankruptcies in the United States are due to healthcare costs. On top of that, one-quarter of healthcare industry spending is deemed wasteful, with about $266 billion of that being administrative costs.

With 78% of healthcare providers looking for some sort of automation in the billing process, Sanjay discusses how AKASA fills that need with a Python-based machine learning model that can:

  • enter data in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system,
  • take claim info from the EHR and enter it into the relevant health insurance website,
  • extract relevant information from a webpage or insurance cards; and
  • automate common questions for health insurance companies by building web scrapers.

Calvin also teases IndyPy’s 15th anniversary celebration, which will be held in person on May 10.
