IndyPy February 2023: Using AWS AI with Python

On Valentine’s Day, the February 2023 edition of IndyPy — Indiana’s largest Python meetup founded in 2007 by Six Feet Up CTO and Amazon Web Services (AWS) Community Hero, Calvin Hendryx-Parker — featured a demonstration of a number of AWS artificial intelligence services by David Sol, AWS Community Builder and SRE engineer at Wizeline.

“Artificial intelligence is becoming a very popular topic. Us, as builders, want to know what we can add to our applications; what we can do to our systems to our solutions, to make use of all of this new stuff,” Sol said at the outset of his presentation.

Sol outlined the three layers of service that AWS provides for artificial intelligence:

  • Infrastructure: The framework and cloud GPUs that AWS provides for developers to experiment with AI solutions.
  • Machine Learning Services: Amazon SageMaker and other platforms related to managing ML work as well as roles and user security.
  • Artificial Intelligence Services: AI services provided to fulfill specific use cases.

AWS’ Artificial Intelligence Services suite made up the bulk of Sol’s presentation. He went from tinkering with AWS Rekognition’s analysis of an image from a movie with Vince Vaughn to translating Valentine’s Day messages from text to audio and back using Polly and Transcribe.
