Plone Products by Six Feet Up

by Six Feet Up Staff last modified 05/25/13

Six Feet Up has developed and made the following third-party products for Plone available to the Community:

EasySlideshow

EasySlideshow.gifEasySlideshow is a Plone product that makes it easy for any content editor to create and manage online slideshows. It comes with all the settings you need to customize your slideshows, such as:

  • Adjusting the delay between slide transitions;
  • Managing the height/width of slideshow images;
  • Controlling whether or not captions are shown with slides;
  • Selecting whether or not users can pause the slideshow on hover;
  • Selecting slides timeout;
  • Turning the display of slide number on/off.

In order to create a slideshow, content editors just upload pictures to a regular folder, click the folder's Subtype menu, and select slideshow. This transforms the regular folder into a slideshow folder, and automatically changes the folder display to a slideshow view. To modify the order in which the slideshow displays the images, content editors just need to reorder the pictures in the folder by dragging them up or down in theContents tab.

Besides living in a dedicated folder, EasySlideshow also supports the ability to display images in a portlet (a.k.a. side box). Slideshows can actually be displayed in any template by calling the slideshow macro that ships with EasySlideshow.

While EasySlideshow's global parameters are controlled via the Control Panel (log in, click Site Setup, and select EasySlideshow Configuration), content editors also have the ability to override the global settings for a specific slideshow directly at the folder level. This allows the use of EasySlideShow in multiple locations on your site without having to make the appearance and function of all slideshows the same.

EasySlideshow is Plone 4 compatible (Plone 3.3.x and up) and requires no custom installation, as it leverages the jQuery library that already ships with Plone. EasySlideshow uses fields already found in the Plone image type for presentation. The jQuery plugin that is the basis for this product is jQuery Cycle.

SolrIndex

solr-index.png

SolrIndex is a product for Plone/Zope that provides enhanced searching capabilities by leveraging Solr, the popular open source enterprise search platform from the Apache Lucene project.

Out of the box, SolrIndex brings in more relevant search results by replacing Plone's default full-text indexing with Solr-based search features, and including the ability to assign weights to certain fields.

Leveraging Solr's advanced search algorithms, SolrIndex comes with exciting features, such as the ability to use stopwords and synonyms. Stopwords allow to control which words the search mechanism should ignore, and synonyms make it possible to extend a query by including additional matches.

SolrIndex also comes with blazing fast and highly scalable search capabilities. SolrIndex is extensible by design, which means it has the ability to integrate with other indexes and catalogs. This is good news for sites that need to provide search capabilities across multiple repositories.

With additional customization, SolrIndex also has the ability to provide faceted search, highlighting of query terms, spelling suggestions and "more like this" suggestions.

Thanks to SolrIndex, Plone and Zope-powered sites now benefit from truly enterprise search capabilities.

Lineage

Lineage logo

Lineage is a Plone product that allows subfolders of a Plone site to appear as autonomous Plone sites to the everyday user. This hub and spoke structure allows site administrators to easily manage multiple, seemingly independent, sub-entity websites in one Plone.

Furthermore, the "parent" site can access and view the content in all the "child" sites while the child sites only view their own content. The parent site can also syndicate chosen content to the selected child sites. Lineage is less complex and easier to manage than a cluster of nested Plone sites but gives users all the same benefits.

Lineage can be used within a large organization to manage multiple microsites, such as school district sites, university departments, corporate product sites, public library satellites, professional association events, and more.

PushHub for Pyramid

Six Feet Up's PushHub is an open source implementation in Pyramid of Google's PubSubHubbub protocol for sharing content amongst many servers. PushHub allows for near-instant notifications of new content throughout the network of sites and enables content editors to curate collections of syndicated pages that appear in their own sites. The PushHub efficiently fetches the published feeds and multicasts the new/changed content out to all registered subscribers or sites. PushHub feeds can come from Plone sites or any other site that can produce a RSS or Atom feed of its content with little modification of the metadata included in the feed. Six Feet Up plans to open source PushHub shortly.

PopupCalendarWidget

The PopupCalendarWidget is meant to replace the default calendar widget that is included in Plone. It is composed of an input field and a javascript popup calendar based on The Plone DHTML Calendar. One of the advantages of this product is that the input allows you to enter a date by hand, instead of having to select each part (year/month/day) in drop down menus. You can also configure the calendar as you want: show/hide the time, choose the format for the time, select which weekday the calendar starts with, show/hide week numbers, etc.

PromoEngine

PromoEngine is an ad and banner management system. It provides a way to easily manage the syndication of static promotional content throughout a Plone site from a single centralized repository of "ads".  The product leverages the Archetypes reference engine to place ads in specific regions of a site ("ad slots").

SmartFolderExportImport

SmartFolderExportImport is a layer added on top of the GenericSetup product, a mini-framework for expressing the configured state of a Zope Site as a set of filesystem artifacts. The product allows to export/import Topic/SmartFolder items metadata as a file.
